There was never yet an uninteresting life.

Such a thing is an impossibility.  Inside the dullest exterior, there is a drama, a comedy, and tragedy.

Most of us have thought about the need to document our lives.  We realize the importance of leaving our stories with our family, of recording history as we saw it, and of acknowledging our own struggles, values, achievements, and triumphs.  We know the process of recording our personal or family history can move us deeply and create a sense of deep satisfaction.

Moreover, our posterity also feel a desire to know of their past, and recording our stories can give them a vital link to that past.  As Alex Haley, the author of Roots¸ said, “In all of us there is a hunger, bone-marrow deep, to know our heritage – to know who we are and where we have come from.  Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning…, a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.”  Despite these universal needs, most people are overwhelmed by the prospect of writing about their own life and do not take the time to embark on the journey of recording their life story.
